The hustle and bustle of Marrakesh slowly fades behind us as we make our way toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road winds its way up the curving Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), cutting through rugged cliffs, scattered Berber villages, and deep valleys. We stop several times—not just for photos, but to quietly take in the impressive landscape.
By midday, we arrive at the striking ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified mud- brick village nestled on a hillside. Walking through its narrow streets feels like stepping back in time. Aït Ben Haddou tells the story of trans-Saharan tradition, and craftsmanship—and has served as the backdrop for films like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.
After lunch, we continue south, passing barren plateaus, palm groves, and small desert villages until we reach Zagora in the late afternoon—often called the “Gateway to the Desert.” Here, we mount our camels and follow slow- moving tracks into the quiet expanse of the pre-Sahara, as the sun gently sets. The day ends away from the road in a Berber camp, where a traditional dinner, music by the fire, and a clear starry sky await us.

The return journey follows a different route, offering new landscapes— passing oases and small Berber villages that provide a glimpse into rural life. Already on the way to the camp, and especially in the early morning, the view opens wide across the quiet, open terrain.
There’s something calming in the vastness here—an unhurried horizon that gives the eyes room to rest. The gentle transition from this stillness to the rising foothills of the Atlas Mountains feels almost meditative.
As Marrakesh slowly comes back into view, its vibrant rhythm returns. This two-day journey offers a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and quiet reflection—a unique escape into Morocco’s diverse heartlands.
